Mette Mortensen

Mette is a genuine and committed outdoor guide. She participated in the third season of the Danish version of "Alone", during which she built a fantastic cabin and spent 58 days in Norwegian nature. Learn more about her experiences here.

My name’s Mette Mortensen. I was born in 1975 and I’m enthusiastic about outdoor living. I spend my everyday working as an outdoor guide and a mountain guide, as an author, speaker and own and manage my company All-Out. I live on Zealand and I am the mother of four wonderful kids, two of which are bonus children. As a child and young person, I was a scout and have always spent my spare time on outdoor pursuits. Since 2013, I’ve worked fulltime with outdoor living, primarily as a teacher and communicator. In 2019, I participated in the third season of the Danish version of ”Alone 3”.

How did your interest in outdoor living arise?
I’ve always been driven by nature and outdoor living and, throughout my life, I’ve spent many hours, days and nights in the open air. In 2013, I chose to pursue my dream of living by the motto, “When I grow old, I’d much rather regret something I did than anything I didn’t do”. This has resulted in a switch from a successful career in management to life as a self-employed outdoor guide – and I certainly haven’t regretted that.

Why’s it good to take off on your own?
To me, having the opportunity to spend 58 days and nights alone in the harsh, raw and amazing Norwegian wilderness was a great experience and a gift. I was out there in autumn 2018 when nature, the cold, the weather and the resources are few, raw and challenging. The experience has given me a great deal of confidence in terms of my own skills and abilities to take care of myself, both physically and mentally. This has made me feel both proud and grateful; the experience has meant a great deal to me and will be part of me for the rest of my life.

Why did you apply to take part in "Alone" and what was it like to participate?
I applied to take part in ”Alone 3” for two primary reasons: Firstly, a desire to face a personal challenge and, secondly, the desire to gain both knowledge, learning and experience in relation to my role as teacher and communicator. My experiences have given me a considerable amount of knowledge and learning which has been of great importance to me – both privately and professionally

What’s your best advice for preparing for wilderness experiences?
The best advice I can give to anyone dreaming of testing their skills in the wilderness is to always prepare well before starting their journey as well as focusing on enjoying the process. Moreover, it’s always important to adapt the trip to your own abilities and competences – this will always result in the best experience.

What gear wouldn’t you want to have to do without?
I definitely wouldn’t want to have to do without my striking steel, with which I’m ensured fire, heat and, not least, the possibility of sending a signal in an emergency.

What does nature give you?
Nature gives me peace and the opportunity to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday living as well as its inputs, demands and expectations. It provides an uncomplicated sanctuary, in which I can more easily distinguish between right and wrong.

What’s the craziest thing you’ve experienced in nature?
I’ve experienced a lot of amazing things. I had one of the greatest experiences in summer 2017 when, on a trip to Greenland, we were woken by a herd of must oxen grazing a mere 100 metres from our camp. Fortunately, they quickly went on their way when we rose.

What do you like about gear from Robens?
I find that Robens gear’s characterised by quality, functionality and good design, all at reasonable prices.

What’s your best tip for newbies?
Always plan your trip to suit your abilities and remember to always enjoy the journey.
